Amazing Up and Coming Medical Technologies

Medical technology is an ever changing field. Each year more research is performed and we get not only more advanced medications, but also more advanced equipment to make diagnosing and treating illnesses easier and less invasive.

As time goes on, not only will doctors be able to cure more illnesses, but they’ll be able to do so with far less trauma to the body. Some of the newest technology is so “cutting edge” that you’re likely to be amazed at what you see. Check out some of the things to come in the medical field.

1. Blood Bots – These tiny bots can travel through the blood vessels, allowing doctors to make repairs to the vessels and to take biopsies. They’re so small you can barely see them with the naked eye, and they may help eliminate the scalpel for many procedures. The doctor can inject the bot into the blood vessel and guide it through a magnetic field. It can be used to clean out vessels that are clogged as well as take tissue samples for biopsies. Because it is so non-invasive, it minimizes risk and shortens recovery time for patients. Scientists expect it to be in use within five years.

2. Artificial Limbs Controlled By Thought – In just a few years we can expect patients requiring artificial limbs to be able to control them with their brain, the same way we control our own natural limbs. These limbs are designed to allow the patient’s nervous tissue to grow onto the device. This will mean that, in time, the limb may even be able to feel sensation or heat through the limb.

3. Camera Mounted Glasses to Restore Sight – These glasses, which have a digital camera mounted to them, are connected to the optic nerve. Already in some trials, they are believed to be able to restore sight to hundreds of thousands of patients who suffer from retinal deterioration. There are other similar technologies in development, including artificial retinas. When these developments are connected and, potentially combined, they may offer sight to many patients who currently have none.

4. Disease Diagnoses through breathalyzers and saliva analyzers – Several different trials are going on to test the ability to identify diseases through our breath and saliva. Researchers have found, for example, that when our breath is analyzed through a laser, a pattern will appear in the breath sample. Certain patterns can indicate the presence of diseases like cancer. In another study, scientists have found that women with benign and malignant breast tumors have differences in 49 different proteins in their saliva, compared to healthy women. So, in the future, breast cancer may be diagnosed simply through a sample of spit.

5. Magnetic Therapy for the Brain – A treatment called Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is on the horizon. Today, doctors perform Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) to treat depression. But, today’s TMS cannot stimulate deep enough into the brain to treat many disorders. The new treatment, which, like today’s TMS, sends an electromagnetic pulse into the brain which can induce neural excitation or inhibition. With the new, deeper treatment, it’s believed that many more diseases can be relieved, including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, eating disorders, and much better treatment for depression.

Medical technology is changing every day. These amazing inventions, as well as more to come, are sure to bring significant benefit to our medical future.
